first haircut...the other one

but it all started with him. months ago he somehow shaved a lock out of the front of his hair...forcing me to at least cut it lower....he was ready to 'cut his locks'.
then he began to insist on a hair cut...with a peace sign in the back.

side note..he is very opposed to a comb...no argument with me there..been there for sure, and will probably return.

poor thing did not realize the barber would have to pick it out :/

well...sundiata had been begging for a haircut for some while. but first i thought i would get some minor barbering done myself. first we headed to "my" barber. after i got out of the chair...vuai followed.

im on line looking at pictures from abl. i come across the collab piece that goldi and flux did. my daughters like..."mommy i like that"...then she sees me, standing beside them. we all have on lanyards for the show. she say's...."did everyone have to wear those?" im like..."just the artists". "but mommy your not an artist". ha! as if this is not enough, after i give her a very rough definition of an artist...which includes.."...creating something that people like to look at"...she says in disbelief "but people dont like to look at what you create..(pictures??)"

can i tell you how much i am changing. and finding myself more. creating who i am to be. and becoming bolder. wanting to shoot sooo raw. exactly what i see if you like it or not.
i was on my way to a gig the other night to shoot(with elisha). and i happened upon this fight. the symbolism and irony....lately i feel like it's me against the world. i mean really. but i am remembering the last time i was here. and the world and life was soooo hard...AND WHAT CAME OUT OF THAT. that was two and a half years ago. and i am overwhelmed with the joy of what will come out of this space.....7.20.09

this past sunday Gia of lockstar hosted a "tea" for little girls that was inspired by a movie that she saw titled The Souls of Black Girls. unfortunately i did not see the movie, however what i did witness was amazing. a gathering of generations...women there to offer there wisdom on the journey of self and what beauty really means. the event was supported by the entire staff of Lockstar salon, as well as, many others from the community. our daughters are constantly bombarded with harsh unrealistic images of what mainstream beauty is...so many thanks to gia for creating a space for the message and also to Lockstar for always cultivating natural beauty!

on april 3rd there is a show that will open called "Gentrify Me". the show will showcase artists portrayl of gentrification in artists communities such as the one i live in...noda. so my contribution and focus has been on fat city...those familiar, know that fat city (on monday nights) was a mecca for real underground hip hop in early 2000. we came together last monday to remember and harness the energy that we all miss, at the construction site of "fat city lofts". this is a small preview. thank you to all the artists that were there.....
